"In Living Colour", one of television's funniest sketch shows, returns to local screens every Monday on SABC 1 at 19:00.
In 1990, a group of hungry, aspiring comedians got together to form a comedy collective in the spirit of television's most famous comedy sketch series, "Saturday Night Live". The collective's name was "In Living Colour”, and the initial mastermind behind it all was Keenan Ivory Wayans.
Together with his multi-talented family members, consisting of brothers Damon, Shaun, and Marlon and sister Kim, Keenan assembled a team of relatively unknown comics who have all hit the big time in recent years. Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, David Alan Grier, Tommy Davidson and Chris Rock shone as regulars on the show's innovative, hilariously funny sketches.
The show's structure consisted of numerous sketches, some of them with recurring characters, being performed in front of a live studio audience. In between the sketches, the show's dance troupe - the Fly Girls - would boogie down to the tunes of either an in-studio DJ or a guest rap artist. One of the Fly Girls was none other than actress and new pop diva, Jennifer Lopez.
But the show's main draw-card was the sketches: skits like the anarchic adventures of Fire Marshall Bill (played decidedly over-the-top by Carrey), the absurd investigations of the Head Detective (played by Damon Wayans), and the antics of Homey The Clown (once again played by Damon Wayans) were all brilliantly creative with strong improvisational qualities.
After Damon Wayans left the show in 1993, the standard of the material seemed to take a slight dive. "In Living Colour" continued to entertain fans up until 1994, when it got the axe from the network.
Most of its stars went on to bigger and brighter things, especially Jim Carrey, who now commands a $20-million pay cheque for a film.
