WILL AND GRACE
They're just good friends, honest.
Posted Fri, 01 Jan 1999

The new sitcom, "Will & Grace", about two flat-mates - a gay male lawyer and a straight female interior designer - is leaving local audiences in stitches.

Will Truman (Eric McCormack) and Grace Adler (Debra Messing) are two people who are perfect for each other, except that Will just happens to be gay, and while romance will never be on the cards, their friendship always comes up trumps.

A successful Manhattan lawyer, Will is likeable, handsome and charming, and has recently ended a long-term relationship. Designer Grace is a beautiful, self-employed career woman who just left her fiancé at the altar. They both love French films and enjoy a good poker night.

The two have been friends forever, and though they're both looking for love, they accepted the fact long ago that there will be no romance between them. Despite this, or possibly because of it, they face life's ups-and-downs together, knowing they will always have each other to lean on.

Executive producer David Kohan explains, "When you look out at the television landscape, the men and women you see are either romantically involved, or they want to be romantically involved, or they inevitably will end up romantically involved. What we want to do is to examine a relationship between a man and a woman where sex isn't a factor."

Kohan and Max Mutchnick created the show which is directed by sitcom guru James Burrows, who not only created "Cheers", but has directed episodes of many other hit comedies, including "Friends", "Frasier", and "Veronica's Closet".

The show is blessed with two hilarious supporting characters: Grace's assistant Karen (Megan Mullally), is a kooky socialite married to a millionaire. She constantly offers Grace the most obscure advice. But it is Will's flamboyant, gay friend Jack, portrayed by Sean Hayes, who steals the show. Jack is totally over-the-top, with a constant neurotic demeanour. He has a pet parrot named Guapo and a pet dog named Klaus von Puppy.

The small, intimate cast members are all superb, offering a sophisticated comedic feast for adult audiences. Make sure you don't miss "Will & Grace" on Thursday nights, SABC 3 at 21:00.
