It isn't every day that a British comedian becomes a household name on US TV but that's exactly what happened to Tracey Ullman.
Tracey takes on... is a half-hour comedy series starring Tracey Ullman, as a variety of classic characters with hilarious and insightful points of view on everything from Sex to the Supernatural.
The award winning series takes on such diverse topics as Marriage, Hollywood, Smoking, Age, and Man's Best Friend.
Tracey Ullman was introduced to American audiences in 1987 with her own comedy/variety show, "The Tracey Ullman Show."
Ullman was born in London, England, to a Polish emigre father and British mother. Her father died when she was six and Tracey was raised by her mother, who encouraged her early performing aspirations.
Her breakthrough came at the avant garde Royal Court Theatre when she created the role of the bizarre club singer Beverly in the improvised play, "Four in a Million".
She next appeared in a successful BBC Television comedy series, Three of a Kind" and had success as a singer with the hit single, 'They Don't Know About Us'.
Ullman's film roles include starring in "I Love You To Death" with Kevin Kline, Woody Allen's "Bullets Over Broadway" and Robert Altman's "Pret a Porter".
She returned to American television in 1993 with "Tracey Ullman... A Class Act" and "Tracey Takes on New York". After these specials won numerous awards in the US a series of "Tracey Takes On" was commissioned by HBO and to date 35 episodes have been produced. The series has won four Emmys, including one in 1997 for Outstanding Music, Comedy and Variety Show, and a CableACE award in 1996 for Best Comedy Variety Series.
