Television action sensation, "The Sentinel", now in its fourth successful season in the U.S., returns to thrill local audiences.
"The Sentinel" chronicles the adventures of Detective James Ellison (Richard Burgi), the lone survivor of a Special Forces helicopter crash in Peru. After surviving 18 months in the hostile jungle, Ellison discovers that he has developed incredibly heightened sensory powers.
Much like tribal cultures where watchmen, or "sentinels", honed their senses to the highest degree, Ellison develops the ability to see, hear, taste, smell, and feel with searing prowess. He uses these skills to track down terrorists, hijackers, assassins and such immoral ilk.
The show is set in the fictional city of Cascade, Washington, and is - at its core - a buddy cop drama. Struggling to cope with his overwhelming abilities, Ellison reluctantly teams up with anthropology graduate student, Blair Sandburg (Garret Maggart). Sandburg's academic knowledge of the "sentinel" myth helps Ellison keep his newly developed powers in check.
The partners report to Captain Simon Banks (Bruce A. Young), a veteran law enforcement officer who often shuns his paperwork for on-the-scene involvement. After an initial period of hesitation, Banks begins to rely on Ellison's powers as a useful tool in solving difficult crimes.
As his trust in Ellison increases, Banks expands his by-the-book approach to law enforcement, tackling cases he couldn't have attempted to crack before Ellison and Sandburg joined forces.
The creative team behind "The Sentinel", executive producers Danny Bilson and Paul DeMeo, claim that "the show has got something for everyone. There's movie-sized action, the drama and tension of the best cop shows and the human relationship of Ellison and Sandburg's ever-evolving relationship. We take these solid elements and then temper them with a strong dose of humor".
"The Sentinel" creators have a number of action/adventure series under their belt, most notably "The Flash" and "Viper," which explains "The Sentinel's" preoccupation with comic-book style mythologies.
South Africans can watch the show every Saturday, on SABC 3 at 19:00.
