Dressed to the nines, the remaining 'Idols' contestants had the crowd swinging with songs from the music world's divas and crooners at this week's Idols Spectacular. But were their voices and personalities big enough to pay homage to the legends of stage and screen?
Up first, eighteen-year-old Cameron Bruce from Johannesburg made the girls swoon with a soulful interpretation of the song that launched a thousand ringtones ? Michael Buble's 'Everything'. Dave said that Cameron made it appear so effortless, "almost in the Chris Isaak mould, which is meant as a compliment". Mara exclaimed that she couldn't believe that Cameron is only seventeen? "Eighteen," he corrected her gently. "You can sing anything," she complimented him. Gareth consulted the popular opinion ? "Don't you guys love him?" he asked, and the crowd roared its approval. As always, Randall was a little more sober-minded. "You?re not going to sing everything equally well," he pointed out reasonably. "This was an adequate job, but it wasn't your best performance." To vote for Cameron call 086 2277702 or SMS "Cameron" to 34680.
Jason Hartman (29) from Durban also went for Buble ? his swingy, cheeky arrangement of The Beatles' 'Can't Buy Me Love'. Dave thought it was good. "It rocked. It swung," he pronounced sagely. "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing," Mara reminded Jason, "and you can swing, baby!" Gareth said Jason wasn't a clear favourite weeks ago, but now he was up front in the competition. "I think we have a lot more to hear from you." Randall pointed out that Jason handled the chorus well, "but during the verses you got a bit lost." Vote for Jason by calling 086 2277710 or SMS "Jason" to 34680.
Thembi Nkosi (19) from Johannesburg chose the Beyonce ballad 'Dangerously in Love', because, she said, everyone knows Beyonce. Dave warned that he was going to contradict himself in his comment. "I love your voice and talent and everything," he said. "I just got bored by what you did tonight." Mara thought it didn't matter what song Thembi picked ? she loved her. Gareth agreed. "Don't worry about what Dave said," he said. "It was a good song. Dave's old ? he probably didn't take his medication!" Randall thought it was clever of Thembi to choose a song from a contemporary artist. "People know the song and they will probably vote for you," he said. Call 086 2277701 or SMS "Thembi" to 34680.
Graeme Watkins (26) from Cape Town summoned up all of his artistic courage to attempt the great Frank Sinatra?s iconic theme song, 'My Way'. In his response, Dave said he took back his earlier comment to Graeme to tone down the manic energy. "You could win this competition," he said. "But not with that kind of performance," Mara agreed. "I said before that you are my favourite, which was probably not fair to the other contestants. You can sing anything," she praised. "But that was just not happening." Gareth was philosophical. "If people don't like it for some reason, it's just one song," he shrugged. Randall said 'My Way' was a song for a mature artist who'd had vast life experience, and that Graeme was simply too young for it. To vote phone, 086 2277713 or SMS "Graeme" to 34680.
Sasha Lee Davids (18) from Cape Town also went big, with the power ballad 'All By Myself', which was a mega-hit for two of the biggest divas, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey. "That song is always a crowd pleaser," Dave allowed, "even if that wasn?t an outstanding performance." Immediately Mara sang 'Old Man River' to him again. "You were absolutely brilliant!" she assured Sasha Lee. "You're gorgeous and you do so well on that stage," Gareth agreed. "That was a bit melodramatic, but it's a powerful song and you'll get votes." Randall cautioned Sasha Lee about showing off. "Don't just focus on the big notes," he pointed out. "You need to concentrate on the entire song." Vote by calling 086 2277708 or SMS "Sasha Lee" to 34680.
That old smoothie Lendel Moonsamy (23), from Durban, did the swingy Michael Buble arrangement of the Van Morrison classic, 'Moondance'. "You've been consistently average," Dave sighed. "But you'll probably stay in the competition due to your rabid fan base." Mara was also unimpressed. "The band was cooking!" she complimented. "But this is about you, and you weren't even boiling. You're not in that song?" Gareth said this was not his kind of music and this is always the week in the competition he looks forward to the least, "but I don't think you were so bad." Randall said Lendel was "extremely undynamic. There was just no sparkle in your performance." Vote by phoning 086 2277712 or SMS "Lendel" to 34680.
"Little Bird" Pixie Bennett (25) from Durban appropriately chose 'Little Bird' by Annie Lennox and for the first time ever in 'Idols', the judges all joined hands and "chair-danced" together! "The Return of The Pixie?" Dave sighed contentedly. "You were like a caged panther up on that stage, strutting up and down? Stunning!" "This is a show about pop, and you were really a pop idol tonight," Mara agreed. "So far, so good," said Gareth. "You chose a great song." Randall reminded Pixie that he told the contestants weeks ago that they had to give a "definitive performance" that the viewers will remember them for, and that tonight was as close as Pixie had been to that. Vote: 086 2277706 or SMS "Pixie" to 34680.
Daniel Baron (17) from Johannesburg showed off old-school style with the Ben E. King & the Drifters standard, 'Save the Last Dance for Me'. Dave seemed to struggle to put into words why he was impressed. "It was a sort of a Fifties, Sixties? New York-Latino, Ritchie Valens sort of vibe," he said. "I liked it!" Mara repeated that she thought Daniel was a versatile performer and a fantastic singer. "But you need to move your groove a little bit!" she encouraged him. "It was a cheesefest!" Gareth laughed. "But you did a good job, dude." Even Randall thought it was good. "But you focus too much on entertaining the audience," he cautioned, "and you lose focus on the singing." Phone 086 2277707 or SMS "Daniel" to 34680
And Lize Heerman (21) from Durban closed the show with Fergie's hit, 'Big Girls Don't Cry'. Dave approved. "You can sing," he reassured Lize. "You're a real pop star and you'll go from strength to strength with this sort of material." Mara said it was a great improvement from last week's performance. Gareth agreed with that ? "you were more believable," he said. Randall said that, like Thembi and Pixie, Lize was very wise to choose a contemporary song. Phone 086 2277709 or SMS "Lize" to 34680.
Voting lines opened at the start of Sunday night's show and will remain open for 24 hours. Viewers can vote for their favourite contestants via SMS or landlines. Voters can SMS 100 times, call 100 times from a landline and make a 100 calls from a cell phone. Do note, though, all calls over the limit will still be charged. SMS's cost R2 per SMS and standard rates apply for cell phone and landline calls.
For the first time in the history of South African 'Idols' the judges have absolutely no say in which contestants go through to the next round ? the show's results are determined entirely by the South African voting public.
The Idols Spectaculars are recorded at the Mosaϊek Teatro in Fairlands, Johannesburg. Tickets are available from Computicket for R40 seated, R20 standing.
