After having seen the best and the worst of what South African singers have to offer, witnessing the sweat and tears that came with theatre week, and eventually being able to vote for the best of the best, 'Idols' has finally reached the all-important Top 10 Spectacular phase.

This week Sunday at 5.30pm on M-Net, the Top 10 Idols finalists will perform in front of thousands of fans at the Mosaik Teatro in Johannesburg. This will be their first time in front of such a crowd, and the first time that they will be accompanied by the 'Idols' band. This season, the contestants will also be allowed to perform with their own instruments, if they so wish.

Within this pressure-cooker environment, a contestant’s song choice is more important than ever before. In a surprising results show on Monday 2 March, most of the bottom half of contestants consisted of the top half from the previous week. This made two points very clear: South Africans are having a tough time choosing their favourites from such a talented group; and winning the 'Idols' crown is anybody's game at this stage.

With the stakes this high, it's crucial that the contestants' song choice is spot on. With this week's theme of "Greatest Hits", will the following choices serve them well enough to secure a place in the next round?

  • Cameron – 'Old Time Rock and Roll' by Bob Seger
  • Daniel – 'Your Song' by Elton John
  • Graeme – 'Unchain my Heart' by Joe Cocker (originally performed by Ray Charles)
  • Jason – 'With a Little Help from my Friends' by Joe Cocker (originally performed by The Beatles)
  • Lendel – 'Lady Soul' by DJ Jazzy D (originally performed by The Temptations)
  • Lize – 'Hallelujah' by Jeff Buckley (originally performed by Leonard Cohen)
  • Ntsepa – 'Dancing in the Street' by The Power of Seven (originally performed by Martha and the Vandellas)
  • Pixie – 'Against All Odds' by Phil Collins
  • Sasha Lee – 'I Will Love Again' by Laura Branigan
  • Thembi – 'Always be my Baby' by Mariah Carey
This season, the Spectacular phase of the show will be recorded at the Mosaϊk Teatro in Fairlands, starting on Thursday, 5 March and tickets are available from Computicket – R40 seated, R20 standing.

Moreover, for the first time in the history of South African 'Idols', the show can now be viewed in simulcast on Easyview as well as on the Magic World channel on DStv Compact. For South Africans who don't have M-Net, they can log onto the M-Net website and view all the performances online after the show. This season, the judges have absolutely no say in which contestants go through to the next round — the show's results are determined entirely by the South African voting public.

Viewers can vote for their favourite contestants via SMS or landlines from 5.30pm on Sunday night (8 March). A limit of 100 votes per telephone number is allowed for each contestant. As in the past, the voting lines will be open for 24 hours and on Monday evening (9 March) between 7pm and 7.30pm the country will find out which contestant didn’t have enough support to keep them in the show.
