Riaan Cruywagen will read his last bulletin on SABC2 at 7pm tonight (26 November).
According to IOL, Cruywagen plans to spend his first evening at home in almost 40 years watching the news with his family.
The website quoted Cruywagen as saying: "I am delighted that from now on I will be home with my family in the evenings after so many years."
He also told the Cape Argus on Sunday that his retirement day – which comes exactly 37 years and over 7000 broadcasts after his first news bulletin in 1975 – would be "just a normal day".
Cruywagen told the Cape Argus that he feels “nostalgic but not emotional” about his departure.
“I am going to miss the adrenalin of live broadcasting, the wonderful atmosphere in the newsroom, and my colleagues,” he said
