It's that magic time of the year again when the Walt Disney Company Africa invites the media to a show-stopping showcase of what the Mouse House has in store.
We were treated to an exclusive rundown of what's to come from the Magic Kingdom including: movies, TV shows, Video Games and other Disney-related material.
Here are just some of the highlights…
Mary Poppins Returns
Taking place 24-years after the original 1964 film, which starred Julie Andrews, attendees had the opportunity to witness teeny bits of footage via a behind-the-scenes look. Colin Firth was revealed to be playing the villain role, while animated sequences (which featured heavily in original) will blend in with the live-action once again. We also heard Emily Blunt's first ever voiceover as the titular character – and despite only being a few seconds long, Disney could not have picked a better Mary Poppins.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
Possibly the biggest surprise of the showcase was footage from Disney's new take on the Nutcracker story, which only hits cinemas precisely a year and a half from now. The early footage (mostly behind-the-scenes of course) showcased a few snippets of footage, along with eye-catching concept art of the four realms. Also, actress Helen Mirren looks positively ghastly (in a good way) as one of the characters in the film.
The Incredibles 2
It's been well over a decade since the Parr family showed off their superpowered abilities. Be prepared for The Incredibles 2; and since we didn't get the opportunity to witness any footage, Disney had the crowd in giggles with a comedic fashion video centred on the first film's standout character, Edna Mode.
Wreck-It Ralph 2
Disney Africa's Senior Vice President and Country Manager, Christine Service revealed that Wi-Fi sweeps Ralph (John C. Reilly) and his friends into a new world – presumably the internet, considering the sequel's lengthy title: Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2
Unfortunately, our hopes of any Avengers 3 footage were dashed as attendees had to settle for the behind-the-scenes reel, which many have already witnessed on YouTube a few months ago. However, we were at least treated to some exciting Ant-Man and the Wasp goodies. The pre-production reel showcased sequences of the Wasp (played by Evangeline Lilly) in action.
It was revealed that the Panther's upcoming solo outing will feature numerous South Africans in its cast, including John Kani – who plays the titular character's father – as well as the latter's son Atandwa Kani.
90 years of Mickey Mouse
Service also revealed that the mouse who started it all is celebrating 90 years of existence; so, without further ado: Happy 90th Birthday Mickey!
Many of Disney's animated classics, including: Tangled, Big Hero 6 and 101 Dalmatians are being turned into animated TV shows. However, 101 Dalmatians seems like the freshest take as the 101 dogs are living on their own without any humans.
DuckTales is also making its return to television with a reboot that looks nostalgic to the beloved 90's phenomenon.
