Broadcast on Sunday, on US cable channel HBO, the seventh and final episode of the seventh season of "Game of Thrones" was watched, as it aired or on replay, by 16.5 million viewers, according to data from Nielsen, which amounts to the largest audience in the history of the series.
The 79-minute finale attracted a live audience of more than 12.1 million Americans; that's 13% more than the previous record set by episode 5 two weeks ago, which drew an audience of 10.7 million fans. it is also 34% more than the final episode of season 6 (8.9 million viewers).
This season of "Game of Thrones" has consistently been ranked second on the list of the most watched series on television and via streaming (after the 2015 season). Close to 90% of HBO subscribers tuned in to the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's literary saga.
The next salvo of episodes of the fantasy drama series is set to reach small screens in the US in 2019.
