The daughter of pop diva Cher is to have a sex change to become a man, a spokesperson confirmed.

Chastity Bono, a 40-year-old writer on and activist for gay and lesbian issues, began the gender reassignment process earlier this year, spokesperson Howard Bragman confirmed in an email.

Bono, the daughter of Cher and her then husband Sonny Bono, had "made the courageous decision to honour his true identity", Bragman said.

"He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by his loved ones," Bragman said.

"It is Chaz's hope that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue, just as his 'coming out' did nearly 20 years ago."
