Levi's Vintage Sundays has taken a month's break in August before heading up north to Tings and Times in Pretoria for September.
The first Sunday in September is the 7th, and that's the night that Nthabi brings her upfront talents to the Vintage Sundays stage. This young emcee has been living her art since school where she would practise her verbal skills whenever she got the chance. Now she's known for an exceptional flow and style that's backed by incisive, cutting writing — she's a powerful, urgent voice. Nthabi is followed by the ever-popular, always up-for-it Kwani Experience. Fusing a myriad of influences into one non-stop flow of live music magic, this eight-piece know how to ride the waves of funk. Their infectious energy, poetic style and raw, unadulterated love of leading their audience on a journey into the heart of soul will have you believing in the beat and begging for more.
14 September sees Fifi, a young musical songstress hailing from Mamelodi. Having started her musical career at 15, hip-hop was not welcoming to a young female rapper. Having performed with Tumi & the Volume and at the OppiKoppi festival, she earned her place in the rap game with her fusion a spoken word guided by hip-hop fundamentals, wrapped in a hydrid of funked up soul and jazzy beats. 340ml follow on with their uniquely soulful sound, all blessed with talent and a natural feel for getting their funk on. These are the guys who know how to push all the right buttons with a mix of dub, reggae, jazz, Brazilian and rock rhythms.
On 21 September two more acts light up the Vintage Sundays stage. The first is Steady Rock. The Mozambiquean born musician/artist, producer, composer, songwriter and guitarist, has worked with some of the best selling artists in the country. From kwaito to hip-hop productions and compositions, Steady Rock is a versatile, all round performer. Next up is Tidal Waves, the reggae kings who are known for their righteous rocking rhythms. They've committed themselves to making "original music for original people" and this is evident in their sweet-skanking sets that have got people up and dancing.
The 28th, the last Sunday in September, sees another awesome night of locals-only music. Southern Gypsey Queen open things up with their independent, uncompromising sound. Rooted in the blues, this hard-rocking group touch a nerve with an honesty and openness. They are followed by the Albert Frost Band who invite fellow guitar hero Greg Georgiades up on stage to join them for the evening. Frost's been flying the blues banner for years now, bewitching audiences with a deft hand and intricate style. Put him on the same stage as multi-instrumentalist Georgiades and sparks are sure to fly. Gavin Minter will also be joining the line-up for this finale September event.
