The Cape Town group with members from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe are up against Nigerian R&B twins P-Square, Tanzanian bongo flava star Juma Nature, Angolan R&B sensation Anselmo Ralph and Kenyan hip hop artist Nameless.
The awards ceremony, to be hosted by ex-boy band sensation Justin Timberlake will be held in Copenhagen on November 2.
The nominations were compiled by MTV Europe?s voting ?Academy? of 1700 people, consisting of key figures from the music industry and MTV viewers from across Europe and Africa. Viewers can vote for their favourite artists online at www.mtveuropemusicawards.com.
Freshlyground's third album is due for release in November this year.
