It's official. The Killers are coming to South Africa this December.
Following earlier rumours sparked by the mysterious appearance and subsequent disappearance of a listing on the Computicket site earlier in August, it has been confirmed that the American band are playing shows in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
The group - singer Brandon Flowers, guitarist Dave Keuning, bass player Mark Stoermer and drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. - will bring hits like 'Human', 'When You Were Young', 'Read My Mind' and 'Mr Brightside' to and Johannesburg's Coca Cola Dome on 4 December and Cape Town's Val De Vie Wine and Polo Estate on 6 December.
Formed in Las Vegas in 2002, they first drew attention with their debut album, 'Hot Fuss', released two years later. Taking their name from a fictional group in a New Order music video, they were largely influenced by Flowers' love for '80s British indie bands like The Smiths and The Cure. Initial comparisons with Duran Duran were inevitable and saw them achieve success, particulay in europe, with songs like 'All These Things That I've Done'.
The follow-up, 2006's Sam's Town, saw the group embrace a more American sound. Partly influenced by 'Born To Run' era Bruce Springsteen, and U2's 'The Joshua Tree', the album even had them collaborating with U2 producer Flood and long-time photographer Anton Corbijn on the project which debuted at the number one spot on the Billboard charts. Branded "one of the best albums of the past twenty years" by Flowers, within four months it sold a million copies in the US alone.
After taking a breather with B-sides collection 'Sawdust', which included a duet with Lou Reed, the group returned to a more electro sound on last year's 'Day and Age'. Drawing comparisons to the Pet Shop Boys it found the group working with Stuart Price who'd given Madonna a disco makeover on 'Confessions on a Dance Floor'.
Next week The Killers begin a tour of North and South American cities as they continue to promote the album that became their third release to hit the top spot on the UK albums chart.
Tickets to the group's South African shows will be available at Computicket.
