Jill Scott’s ‘Live in Paris’ is nothing short of a goodie bag. This deluxe edition DVD and CD combo leaves you feeling like an excited child holding ice-cream, candyfloss and popcorn all at the same time.
But it's no child’s play when Scott gets down to belting out her killer signature tunes. This (deep breath) multi-talented three-time Grammy-Award winning R&B singer is making a habit of releasing concert recordings: issued fresh on the heels of her third studio album ‘The Real Thing’, ‘Live in Paris’ is her second live offering since 2001's ‘Experience: Jill Scott 826+’.
Scott’s vocal ability is as impressive as ever. She successfully fuses R&B, jazz, spoken word and hip-hop but has an unmistakable neo-soul style. In Paris, she opens with a unique version of ‘The Way’ from her album ‘Who is Jill Scott?’ but the show's definite highlight is her fantastic rendition of ‘Whatever’. The prominent saxophone and trumpet playing are mesmerising and the backing vocalists deserve special mention for their consistency. And things get even more interesting as the song takes a spicy Spanish twist towards the end.
‘The Fact Is (I Need You)’ will magically transport you to the show and leave you feeling like you’re part of the crowd who are reduced to a stupor of loud clapping and screaming as the song climaxes. Equally mesmerising are the uplifting ‘Golden’ and the spontaneity of ‘My Petition’ and ‘He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat)’.
What this album makes clear is that Scott isn't afraid to explore raw issues about love and relationships through her music. Let her take you on a personal journey through her own experiences. You have to hear it to believe it. It’s truly unreal.
» A bonus DVD features Scott live from the House of the Blues in Los Angeles performing tracks such as ‘Crown Royal’ and ‘Hate On Me’ from her third studio album. It also has a documentary with Jill’s fans on the streets of Paris.
