Wolfmother scores 4/5

Their power chords are surely meant to be heard on vinyl, Andrew Stockdale's distinctive, whiny voice is surely a 70s icon reincarnated.

Let's just say, Wolfmother and Woodstock would have been great friends.

Australian-bred Wolfmother has earned rock-god status, not only on their home turf, but amongst rock fans from all corners of the world's arenas.

Their debut, self-titled album was a cult hit. Young skinny-jean wearing Pete Doherty look-alikes couldn't stop talking about the epic Aussies. They brought out hits like 'Joker And The Thief', 'Mind's Eye', 'Dimension', and 'Woman', now played back-to-back in gig spots around the country (not to mention, on programmes like The O.C.?!).

The question is not whether they're a good band, more so, whether or not they can live up to their prized debut release.

After hearing the first single from 'Cosmic Egg', worry began to set in. Had Wolfmother done a Kings Of Leon and gone commercial? 'New Moon Rising' certainly wasn't made for the die-hards, it was made to get airplay on radio.

However, the rest of the album is Wolfmother to the very core. It's all there: the powerful guitar solos, the eccentric lyrics, the distortion, the metal-inspired drumbeats. One can just imagine 70s hippies head-banging to '10, 000 Feet', swaying their hands to 'Far Away', and getting down to 'California Queen'.

In this musically saturated world filled with countless up-and-coming alternative bands and indie wannabes, it's difficult to set a band apart from the rest.

Wolfmother has the capability to cross generational gaps and leave Hendrix and Zeppelin fans satisfied, while keeping up with the Interpol/White Lies-loving fans of the world at the same time. Together with a widened fan base, a new album of inspired tracks and intricate riffs; setting Wolfmother apart from the rest of the world's "rock stars" shouldn't really be a mammoth task.
