Colbie Caillat's debut album, 'Coco', was a run-away success which rocketed her into the orbit of fame and glitz in record time — and all indications are that 'Breakthrough' is going to be as big, if not bigger.
Her first album was driven up the charts by two hugely popular singles — 'Bubbly' and 'Realize' — and she has repeated the successful formula with the pre-release of this album's pace-setter single 'Fallin' For You'.
The single debuted at number 12 in the Billboard 100 and it has already become her second biggest-selling song. Only released a few months ago in America it is already being aired on radio stations all over the world.
Caillat's charming, easy-listening voice and laid-back style is what made her so popular so quickly but this time round her producers have added more depth to her backing mix with cello, violin as well as some good guitar work by David Becker.
The end result is a more polished presentation which fortunately doesn't ever become too slick to distract from the charming naiveté of her voice.
She sings (and writes) the kind of songs one could listen to anywhere, any time. In essence they are love songs, but well constructed and well sung without too much syrupy sweetness.
My only criticism of her style in both albums is that her songs are all rather similar sounding. Her voice is very pleasant, but she doesn't project much depth or range. I couldn't really find a WOW! song among the 13 featured on this album.
But then that's her unspoilt way of doing things and clearly her clear, natural projection is what the world finds hugely appealing.
There is very little doubt that 'Breakthrough' has all the right credentials to become Caillat's second multiple platinum money-maker.
