Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood just have to be two of the greatest blues rock musicians on this old planet. Individually they are outstanding. Together they are absolutely sensational.
The two former Blind Faith band mates got together for the first time in many, many years for a two-and-a-half-hour concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden last year and this album is a live recording of that historic event.
There always has been an undeniable, magical chemistry between the two of them and you can still feel it, even after all the years of not playing together, from the rousing opening number 'Had To Cry Today' down to the closing classic 'Cocaine'.
The guitar work through all the 21 songs is stunning, all the more so because the entire band was made up of only Clapton and Winwood on guitar and vocals, Willie Weeks on bass, Chris Stainton on keyboards and Ian Thomas on drums. And that's it — nothing fancy, no electronic whizzed up sound — just good, honest, driving rock and blues.
It's difficult to choose favourites in this collection because they do so many great songs of their own, plus a couple by JJ Cale, Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Holly who are equally difficult to beat.
Forced to select I would need to sidestep even big numbers such as 'Can't Find My Home' and 'Presence of the Lord' and go for their version of 'Rambling On My Mind', Winwood's own 'Had To Cry Today' and 'Double Trouble' which they do almost better than the original Otis Rush recording.
Fans have waited years for this event and here's hoping that we will see and hear these two together regularly from now on.
This concert recording is also available on DVD.
