Motown 50 scores 3/5

Going back in history it’s difficult to believe that the iconic Motown record label — which raised soul music to hit status — started off in a converted house in the suburbs of Detroit.

Since then it has taken legendary footsteps in the history of music, not only in the USA, but also in the UK where the “Sound of Young America” got the teens bopping and originally inspired groups such as the Rolling Stones, The Who and The Beatles.

Setting the early scene for the many successful years to come, Motown scored an amazing 100 plus US Top 10 hits and 31 Number One songs during its golden era between 1961 and 1972.

Recently Motown asked music fans to vote online for their favourite Motown track and this triple-CD album features the top 47 songs.

Featured artists include Diana Ross, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, The Isley Brothers, The Supremes and The Marvelettes and Michael Jackson.

Some of the songs show their age, but old favourites such as 'Rockin’ Robin', by Jackson and Stevie Wonder's 'Signed, Sealed and Delivered' still have more than enough to get fingers clicking.

The most votes went to 'I Want You Back' by the Jackson 5, but my choice would have been between Michael Jackson’s 'Ain’t No Sunshine' (voted number five) and Marvin Gaye’s 'I Heard It Through the Grapevine' (voted number eight).

It’s pleasant collection of some musical historic value and a good one to whip out to get the older teens bopping.
