She's one of Scotland's most famous exports ? and is always available when Madiba needs her for a 46664 concert ? but Annie Lennox has hardly been prolific in the 17 years since her debut solo album, 'Diva'.
With just four solo albums released (by comparison, fellow divas Mariah Carey and Madonna have released eight studio albums each in the same period), it was perhaps inevitable that her first solo hits compilation would include a "filler track" or three.
The result is a best-of collection that opens impressively and strongly with Lennox?s most well-known solo hits: 'Little Bird', 'Walking on Broken Glass', 'Why', and 'No More I Love You's'. After that it's over to lesser-known singles like 'Cold', 'Pavement Cracks' and 'Dark Road', off her under-rated fourth album, 2007's 'Songs of Mass Destruction'.
That album's second single, 'Sing', which was recorded to raise funds for SA's Treatment Action Campaign, and increase awareness of HIV/Aids, is also here ? and though it didn't set charts alight, it's a pleasant sing-along affair that boasts contributions from 23 top female singers including Dido, Celine Dion, Madonna, Angelique Kidjo, Fergie, KT Tunstall, Pink and Bonnie Raitt.
There are are also two new tracks included ? 'Shining Light' (a cover of a song by Ash), and 'Pattern of My Life' (a cover of a rare Keane B-side called 'Closer Now' when Keane released it). Both tracks showcase Lennox's still-powerful voice ? and make you wish she'd record more music.
Still, this is a solid collection of power pop for fans ? and those of us who've loved a Lennox track here and there.
Got something to say?
