Best of the Fest scores 2.5/5

There are those of us who wait in eager anticipation for the latest incarnation of 'The Fest' to take place every year. Those who fainted during the 2008 Muse performance, belted out the lyrics during Staind in 2007 or raised the devil horns high for Metallica in 2006.

Oh, wait; those bands don't actually make an appearance on 'Best of the Fest 2006-2009'.

What should have been a runaway success is in fact an album flawed in so many ways. From exclusions to song choices to the fact that it seems rushed and not carefully thought out, 'Best of the Fest' is anything but epic.

Firstly the album, which features eight tracks from this year's line-up (including the last minute no-shows Bullet For My Valentine and Red Jumpsuit Apparatus), should have been released after the event when people grab at leftover souvenirs, eager to hold on to pieces of the festival.

Clips of various performances, snippets of fans rocking their socks off, a music video or two: the potential for this compilation to have been a real collectors item was just thrown away.

The only pro to the album is the inclusion of local talent, in the form of alternative electro act Zebra & Giraffe, indie rockers aKing and household favourites The Parlotones. While bands like Taxi Violence and Fokofpolisiekar didn’t make the cut, at least 'Best of the Fest' highlights some of the country’s top bands.

Whatever the reason may be, lack of licensing deals or just poor planning, leaving out names like Muse, Metallica, Fatboy Slim and Chris Cornell really doesn’t justify the title 'Best of the Fest'.
