Admittedly perhaps temporarily breaking away from his roots as a solo acoustic guitarist, John Vesely returns with a follow-up to the 2007 re-release of 'Awake', as 'A Twist In My Story' once again characterises all that is captivating and beautiful about the talented songwriter's success in serenading all that are blessed in crossing paths with his impressive musicianship.
"I kept a lot of those same things from the first album because the way I write didn't change. It just became more complex," Vesely recently said of the 12-track wonder.
"Some changes were necessary this time around because of the developments I've had as a person and as a performer. I just wanted to be creative and make the songs I wanted to make. I only used what I thought each song needed and that meant adding some new layers to the cake."
Those "layers" are typified by the marvellously re-recorded versions of 'Maybe' and 'Your Call', which featured on the album's predecessor as raw, acoustic tracks, while 'Like A Knife' and 'Stay, Don’t Go' wholeheartedly encapsulate Vesely's ambition to steer well clear of digression.
As well as Vesely's incorporation of an array of session musicians on his latest release, stalwart production artists Danny Lohner and Butch Walker — who have worked with Angels And Airwaves and Fallout Boy respectively — lend their collective expertise to Vesely's progression too, making 'A Twist In My Story' that much more of an accomplished affair.
Standout tracks — 'Suppose' and 'Fall For You' — rise to the fore in converse magnificence, with the former an up-tempo delivery of lyrical content and instrumentation steeped in emotion and the latter a potentially soppy love story saved by Vesely's glorious voice and penchant for the poetic.
Whether he is casually strumming the guitar, masterfully orchestrating the piano keys or passionately crooning away at the microphone, Vesely is indeed a joyous, sincere gift to a music industry all too often littered with shallow 'artists' and their two-bit releases.
