The name Steve Hofmeyr elicits a variety of emotions. There are those who associate him mainly with his famous Blue Bulls rugby song, 'Ek bly 'n Bul', while others see him as a womaniser.
But there is the flipside — Steve Hofmeyr, the entertainer!
If you can look past all the negative publicity and ignore the fact that he is a staunch Blue Bull fan (not a bad thing to be), you may well enjoy his latest music release.
'Steve Hofmeyr sings Kris Kristofferson - Live at Emperors Palace' is available in both CD and DVD format, although it is the DVD that gives you the best view of his artistic talents.
Obviously if you are either a Hofmeyr or Kristofferson fan you will love this — with classics like 'Me And Bobby McGee', 'Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down', 'Why Me?' and 'Help Me Make It Through The Night'. artistic talents.
On the CD you will come to appreciate his powerful baritone voice, which has also produced Neil Diamond covers and the world-acclaimed duet 'You Don't Bring Me Flowers' with Belgian star Dana Winner.
However, this South African singer, songwriter and actor is at his best in front of a live audience, which is why the DVD is a more accurate account of his talents.
Playing before an audience that ranges in age from early teens to pensioners he makes it clear that his music roots lie in the 1960s and '70s.
And it is not surprising that he chose an icon like Kristofferson for his latest project.
Or as he himself said: "I have always been deeply moved by the story and songs of this poet and reluctant superstar. Kristofferson facts and myths abound, but it is up to big fans like me to pass on this acclaim to another generation."
The CD first has the 13 songs he performed live, with just a brief cut of his interaction with the audience at the end. The DVD has a lot more, the entire show, and runs for 75 minutes. It is the bits in between the songs that makes this so enjoyable — unless, of course, you are younger than 30.
As Hofmeyr himself said to the younger generation: "This show is going to kill you, you are going to hate this, it is going to drive you mad, it is the slowest music you have ever heard in your life. This is our way at getting back at your generation for the crap music you brought into this world."
