Greatest hits albums are always a difficult sell, because no matter which songs you select, there will always be fans who lament the exclusion of their favourite track(s). This is assuming of course that you like the band to begin with...
Anyone with a passing interest in music should know about Goo Goo Dolls, thanks in large part to that jerker of all tears, 'Iris'. If you managed to not get fixated on this one hit of theirs, you'll also know that the Dolls have lobbed quite a few other songs through the hits hoop.
A testament to this is the ability to release two greatest hits albums within a year of each other — a feat that very few other artists can match.
Of course, not all of the songs on 'Greatest Hits Volume Two' are hits per se, as the album contains rarities, B-sides and some live numbers. It even has the demo version of 'Iris'.
But far from being a scurvy-eyed attempt at filling this second volume, this compilation actually works very well as the 22 songs provide a great oversight of the band's musical progression over the years. For example, did you know that they have their roots in early '80s punk rock?
But here comes the clincher: 'Greatest Hits Volume Two' also includes a bonus DVD with the videos of almost all of the hits found on 'Volume One' and live performances of six songs.
A rundown of what you get on the album then: on disk one you have 15 original Goo Goo Dolls songs, plus seven cover versions (22 in all); on the DVD you get the videos of 17 songs, and six live performances (23 in all).
As greatest hits albums go, that's not bad at all.
