Meet Algebra, a new R&B solo artist on the block. She's been dubbed the "simplest solution when mainstream success seems to be about the right hair, nails and make-up". It comes as no surprise then that she happens to sound like another "real" girl, India Arie. Not only vocally but also in her guitar-laden music like her opening track 'At This Time' — but the explanation for that is producer Kedar Massenburg who brought neo soul superstars Erykah Badu and D'Angelo to fame.
Don’t be alarmed though, she's far from being an unoriginal knockoff. It turns out that she’s been a backing vocalist for the likes of Monica and Bilal for years. And, more importantly, her voice is definitive and melodic.
'Halfway' is reminiscent of an R&B ballad and manages to expose Algebra's true identity in this genre, which she doesn't cling onto but easily touches on a bit of pop, rock, funk and crunk along the way.
You'll love the mellow hip-hop element of easy beats on 'Run & Hide' and 'U Do It For Me' with the latter already saturing our local airwaves. But the highlight is hot R&B track 'Tug Of War', especially the bonus track version featuring Joe Thomas. Be sure not to skip 'My Pride', '(Holla Back) Simple Complication' and 'I Think I Love You'.
As in her music Algebra is easy and free but, most importantly of all, grounded in her images. A natural beauty lying on her back smiling at the sky, sporting colourful clothing and Chuck Taylors, her voice is unassuming and her sound is unique.
Without a doubt, Algebra is an awesome addition to the world of neo soul music.
