With vocalist Francois van Coke and bassist Wynand Myburgh plying their respective trades in Van Coke Kartel and drummer Jaco Venter and guitarist Hunter Kennedy following suit in aKing, it seemed the veritable juggernaut that is Fokopolisiekar was petering out to relative obscurity.
Well, with the apparent side projects cast to the backburner for the time being, the Afrikaans rock music pioneers are back with a release that proves they are still alive and kicking, nowhere close to bringing to an end a quite illustrious reign at the helm of the market they cornered some four years ago.
Just enough to enliven the waning spirits of their robust fan base and perhaps win over a few more to their clique, the quintet's return sees a four-track release that is more of the tried, tested and subsequently successful same.
Produced by guitarist Johnny De Ridder and co-written by van Coke and Kennedy, with lyrics professed to "reflect the harsh reality" of the latter's daily observations, the EP is packed with punch and courteously short on religious slurs compared to its predecessors.
Unadulterated, cocky, raw and opinionated insight lines listeners' ears, as the relatively iconic Van Coke and his impassioned cohorts step up a couple more rungs on their fast-elevating ladder of achievement.
'Van Weelde En Rykdom' and 'Tussen Die Krake' are the standout songs, both showcasing Fokopolisiekar's penchant for driving verses, rolling choruses and complex bridges.
Recorded with the meticulous Theo Crous at Bellville Studios, the quality of production is particularly apparent in "Kyk Noord' and the title track.
Short on songs the release may be, but additional extras are in abundance. The overall CD/DVD package includes a self-styled trip down memory lane with six music videos including fan favourites 'Hemel Op Die Platteland', 'Brand Suid Afrika' and 'Tevrede?'
A pleasing precursor as Fokofpolisiekar prepare to further propagate their collective career, 'Antibiotika' does measurably well to tide followers over until the liberation of their next full-length album.
