The 25th of February 2017 brought the highly-anticipated Masqued Ball at the much-loved Kogelbaai venue, where party-goers were able to enjoy top-notch tunes at a picturesque sitting on a beachfront. Amidst the usual flower crowns and tie-dye, were masks and wigs and crazy outfits (well, crazier than usual!) as well as psychedelic performers of all kinds. With an array of stalls selling everything from slap chips and samoosas to curries and stirfrys and hairwraps and crystals to t-shirts and dream catchers, attendees were spoilt for choice in a gypsy-like marketplace.
Alien Safari are known for their out-of-this-world psychedelic décor and they really lived up to their reputation. The dancefloor was encased in a technicoloured, geometric awning and this year’s stage boasted a beautiful mask-like canopy with a pair of eyes on the backdrop.
Our party started off with groovy sunset set from Josh Mac and Saai took us from dusk into night time with some melodic and uplifting beats that got everyone warmed up for the night ahead.
The night time session was pure madness as usual, starting off with Chabunk and Sci Lab who, staying true to his night time roots, delivered a high-energy, full power set. He is a treat to watch on the decks as he jams just as hard (if not harder!) than everyone on the dancefloor as he plays, always giving us a true performance with his epic stage presence.
The dynamic duo, Qube and Dyce (the collaborative act of Rubix Qube and Dyce) took to the decks next, dropping banger after banger, including everyone’s favourite track, Witch Doctor. This set really showcased the talent of both DJs/producers, who when combined create something magical.

Alien Natives- the new brainchild of psychedelic wizard Bruce (aka Solar Axis aka Spliff Politix) displayed just how talented this trance extraordinaire really is with some mind-warping psychedelic tunes that took us on a journey from start to finish.
In the late hours when most of the dancefloor had cleared out, the real freaks came out for Highstyle, as well as the internationals Dirty Saffi (UK) and Dust (Italy) who took us into the twilight hours of the morning with some of the craziest music to ever grace the dancefloors of Cape Town.
A particular highlight of the night time was the expertly done lighting, which set the scene for the psychedelic showcase that took place with performers on stilts, acrobats, fire dancers and flow artists hula-hooping and spinning poi. (Did anyone else see that magical human dragon walking across the beach?! It even breathed fire!)
After a saltwater cleanse in the sea, we were ready to take on the Sunday Funday, starting the day off with an epic breakfast set from Dala, who was followed by Waio (GER) who took us on an aural journey. The DJ’s own excitement and energy was contagious, and the energy and vibe on the dancefloor was palpable during his set.
He was followed by DJ Mark, a master of his craft, who has been making some serious waves in the scene and definitely seems to have gained a massive following over the last season. The party was closed with the ever-popular Ritmo (ISR) who gave us a perfect end to a perfect party.
You can always count on Alien Safari for a flawless production on every level. Much gratitude to the organisers, DJs, security, stallholders, party animals and everyone else involved in creating such an incredible event.
See you all at Sprung!
