Jay-Z is set to become the first rapper in history to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of fame
As such, the Brooklyn born performer, producer and all-round entrepreneur will join the likes of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Michael Jackson, all of whom have proven their ability to consistently write hits and have informed, reflected or reshaped culture as a result of their lyrics.
Despite rap and R&B music dominating the charts and popular culture, it may come as a shock that Jay Z - one of the world's biggest selling artists and one with 21 Grammy Awards sitting on his shelf - is the first rapper to be honoured in such a way.
However, an artist can only be inducted if he or she has been writing hits for two decades. Jay-Z didn't make his chart debut until 1996.
