'The Rebound' follows that well-worn formula of the romcom. You know ? boy meets 40-year-old mum; boy falls for mum (not his); boy decides to become a nanny; mum falls for boy; things go pear-shaped.
Well, okay, that may be a slight variation, but you get the picture.
The boy in question is 25-year-old Aram Finklestein (the sidekick from the 'National Treasure' films, Justin Bartha), a bright college graduate who is working in a coffee shop, while he gets over his brief marriage to a beautiful, but ultimately conniving French girl. He lives with his over-involved Jewish parents. Don't judge; your name is not Aram Finklestein.
Sandy, the gorgeous 40-year-old divorcee (played somewhat ironically by Catherine Zeta-Jones), moves to the city with her kids when her hubby cheats on her during their son's birthday party. She beats Aram up during a self-defence class and then hires him to look after her kids. Admittedly, not the most prudent parenting decision.
Did I mention the 15-year age-gap? Not to worry, pretty much everyone else in the film does. Repeatedly. With two such likeable characters, there is little else to impede the inevitable hook-up.
Writer/director Bart Freundlich relies too heavily on toilet humour (literally ? there is a random scene involving a public toilet), but for the most part, the script is rather witty and entertaining.
No worse than your average romcom, 'The Rebound' has the advantage of some fairly decent acting, not least from Sandy's precocious offspring. The degree to which you will find it entertaining is probably directly proportional to your age and gender ? the older and more female you are, the funnier it will become.
