Blood: The Last Vampire scores 3/5

What it lacks in dialogue and story, 'Blood: The Last Vampire', makes up for with superb visuals and massively entertaining fight sequences, but best of all it consigns the sparkly vampires of 'Twilight' to the dust.

Sure, the dialogue is cornball, the CGI is poor, and there is not much of a story — something about demons, vampires and a covert operation is all you really need to know — but visually 'Blood: The Last Vampire' is quite superb.

If you're a fan of the anime it is based on — or any anime for that matter — you will appreciate what director Chris Nahon brings to the big screen.

Gianna Jun is a treat as Saya, a human/vampire half-breed, on a mission to vanquish her vampire brethren to the netherworld. Armed with a razor-sharp sword and a bucket-load of attitude, the diminutive Saya (dressed as a Japanese schoolgirl) hands out all sorts of ass-kickings.

Top on her list is powerhouse demon Onigen (the flawless beauty Koyuki). Onigen is the mother of all evil and you won't have much trouble working out her connection to Saya… it's pretty much spelled out for you from the start. All roads lead to Onigen, and while the story lacks any sort of punch, the final sequence is worth the wait.

If you're expecting pale, emo vampires don't bother with this one, and you'll be disappointed if you want something deeper than a thimble, but if you're a fan of anime, Japanese pop culture or you just want to watch the blood flow, then Blood: The Last Vampire will do the job.
