English ex-pat Joe lives a fairly blissful existence in the US with his American wife Marianne and his two daughters. But after a traffic car accident that claims Marianne's wife, his happiness ends in an instant. His daughters, Kelly and Mary, were in the car when their mother died, and are traumatised at the violent loss of their mother. Joe decides the family need a change of scenery and move to Italy in a bid to move on with their lives. While Kelly takes to her new life with gusto, younger daughter Mary seems unable to move past her acute emotional pain, a situation which manifests itself in the little girl suddenly being able to see, hear and speak to her mother's ghost.
