A movie with the title 'Zack and Miri Make a Porno' is always going to be a little awkward. The kind of awkward that has you sliding down in your chair, blocking your ears, and kind of, sort of, peeping through one half-closed eye.
The kind of awkward that should never, ever, involve your parents or a first date.
But behind all the awkwardness and… well… porn (yes, the title says it all) is a rather mushy — dare I say prudish? — and highly-improbable love story. Written and directed by Kevin Smith (Silent Bob) and starring Seth Rogen as Seth Rogan and the irresistibly cute (yes, even in those granny panties) Elizabeth Banks, 'Zack and Miri' is essentially your formulaic romcom with X-rated puns and a couple of former porn stars (Traci Lords and Katie Morgan).
In a nutshell: boy meets girl; boy and girl grow up; boy and girl are best friends; boy and girl never think about having sex; boy and girl run out of money; boy and girl decide to have sex (with each other) on camera for money.
There's more, of course (duh! it's a romcom), but you get the picture.
Acting alongside the porn stars — in both the movie and the porno — are Jason Mewes (Silent Bob's buddy Jay) as the human embodiment of Viagra, Craig Robinson as a disillusioned barista-cum-producer who just wants to see titties, Bobby Long (Brandon Routh), a former-jock-turned-gay-lover, and Brandon St Randy (a very entertaining Justin Long) his gay porn star lover.
So, to recap: the movie about making a porno stars two former porn stars as actresses, two actors pretending to be porn stars, two actors attempting to make porn without being porn stars, a whole lot of porn lingo, and a little bit of porn.
Oh yes… and some lovemaking. But you probably don't want to hear about that. If you did, you probably wouldn't be reading a review of a movie called 'Zac and Miri Make a Porno'.
You dirty scoundrel you.
