Poor acting, absolutely no character development, no plot to speak of, and really no point, 'Scar 3D', the latest 'torture porn' movie to hit our shores is easily the worst movie I have seen this year, and quite possibly the worst I have seen in my entire life?
There was a time when horror movies would scare you with the inference of violence. The original 'Friday the 13th' had very little onscreen blood and gore, but I still rate it as one of the most frightening films I have ever watched. 'The Exorcist', while jam-packed full of unsettling scenes, was not gory, but I still have only been able to watch it once. It left a lasting impression on me and changed the way I saw horror movies.
But since Eli Roth delivered 'Hostel' ? the original torture porn showpiece ? new young directors are doing their damndest to outdo each other on the gore. They seem to score points for audience members that faint of throw up and their aim is to gross you out, while at the same time one-upping their pretentious cronies, who all try to sell this crap off as art.
I can almost picture the likes or Roth and Jed Weintrob (the man responsible for 'Scar') sitting around a table boasting about their latest 'horror' exploit.
"Dude, and then I am totally going to put a blowtorch to this hot little Asian girl's face!" brags one.
"Pfft, that's nothing bro! I am so going to cut these teenage girls up! And I am going to do it really slow?" says the other, absolutely beaming with pride.
Of course by paying so much attention to the gross-out factor, they forget everything else necessary in making a movie.
In a nutshell here is what you can expect: When Joan Burrows (Angela Bettis) was a teenager she survived being tortured by the local serial killer, Bishop (Ben Cotton), and managed to kill the bad guy. Some years later she returns to her hometown for no other reason than to see her niece Olympia (Kirby Bliss Blanton) get crowned King of the Fish. Cue niece's friends to start turning up dead and butchered by a (gasp!) copycat killer?
The writers of this crap may have been able to come up with something far better if they had not been so preoccupied with the torture of young teenagers throughout ? paying special attention to the girls (the usual misogynistic behavior that has become the norm in recent horror films) ? but there you have it.
It is not scary, it is not clever and it is certainly not a new concept. What it is, however, is puerile, over the top and quite frankly offensive. The only thing saving it from a zero rating is the 3D effects. But if you want to be blown away by this new "reach out and grab you" technology, while at the same time enjoying a decent film, best you stay away from 'Scar 3D'.
But hey, if you want to see people getting tortured, go for it and right after the credits roll you might also want to book some time in therapy?
Got something to say?
