Robert Pattinson has been confirmed to star in futuristic western The Rover.

The Twilight Saga heartthrob has officially been offered a lead role in the futuristic western by Animal Kingdom director David Michod.

The film was given the go-ahead when it received funding from an Australian production company along with three other projects, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Ruth Harley, Screen Australia's CEO, said in a statement: "These four highly engaging and diverse Australian stories have huge potential. The Rover is a powerful, well-crafted script from a talented team with an impressive cast."

Pattinson (26) will play injured gang member Rey who joins forces with bitter loner Eric, played by Guy Pearce.

Together they will hunt down Rey's gang through the Australian Outback after the last of Eric's possessions are stolen.

David Linde from Lava Bear and Liz Watts from Porchlight Films will produce.

Pattinson will be seen in the final instalment of the Twilight Saga franchise, Breaking Dawn - Part 2, later this year.
