Thor 2 will feature a "major, major new antagonist".

The film, which sees Chris Hemsworth reprise his role as the titular character in the sequel to the 2011 film, and Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige has revealed that the new antagonist will not be Thanos, the villain teased at the end of The Avengers.

When Feige was asked if the villain will appear in Thor 2 to seek revenge after Loki (Tom Hiddleston) failed him in The Avengers, Feige replied: "No, future, future. But there will be a major new villain. A major, major new antagonist."

While the "major new villian" has yet to be revealed, Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen - who won the Best Actor prize at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday (27 May) - has been linked with a villainous role in the film.

Feige also revealed Natalie Portman will play one of the "biggest parts" in the movie as she reprises her role as nurse Jane Foster, while Thor will continue to be affected by the events of The Avengers.

Feige added: "It's not all polished and golden in this film. And the events of Avengers will have affected Thor for sure. His relationship with Loki will continue to evolve, and the biggest part is Natalie and Thor returning with Jane Foster."

Thor 2 - which is also set to feature Idris Elba (Heimdall) and Anthony Hopkins (Odin) – is currently scheduled for release in November 2013.
