'Instant Message' aka 'Christmas in Boston' is another fluffy, formulaic Christmas rom-com. It is what it is. That being said, it is not particularly disappointing.
Better than most made-for-TV movies, this feel-good flick directed by Neill Fearnley is packed full of true love, likeable characters and Christmas cheer.
It's the standard boy (doesn't) meet girl story. Seth (Patrick Adams from 'Old School') and Gina (Marla Sokoloff from 'Dude, Where’s My Car?') have been pen pals since they were kids, but they have never met or spoken to each other. Yip, things have been strictly confined to the written word.
Now adults — an exec at a toy company and journalist respectively — the two finally have the opportunity to meet one another when Seth comes to a toy convention in Gina's hometown.
The shy scribes have already given each other pictures of themselves. There is just one teeny weenie problem — they weren't of themselves, but rather of their more confident best friends Matt (Jonathan Cherry) and Ellen (Lindy Booth). Both manage to persuade their buddies to go on the date, but things start to go terribly wrong when the two hit it off.
A farce of mistaken identities unfolds; hearts are broken; true love is found; and everyone gets caught up in the warm snuggly mood of Christmas.
There is a reason why this movie didn't make it to the big screen, but if you're feeling a little down or are in the mood for some fairytale romance, this should do the trick.
