Well, the title kinda says it all. From the land of the automobile comes a fast-and-furious movie about cars and the youngsters that love them. To be more precise, it’s a movie about street-racing or dragging, as it’s known here. Vin Diesel (absolute hunk with gravelly voice from "Saving Private Ryan") is the undisputed leader, Dominic Toretto, who heads up a motley crew of speedsters. They’re held together by their love and appreciation of souped-up vehicles, dragging and, of course, speed.

Apart from the illegal street-racing, could Toretto be involved in something just as illegal but far more dangerous? A gang is boosting electronic equipment from pantechnicons by forcing the trucks off the road. These slick operators have an unusual way of jacking trucks. They box the truck in using four motorcars and force it to stop using a harpoon-style gun and some rabid driving techniques.
Paul Walker ("The Skulls") plays the undercover cop, Brian O’Conner, sent in to infiltrate the group and find out who is behind the truck-jackings. He is drawn to the magnetic personality of Toretto, who lives his life in quarter mile stretches, has a gas tank for a brain and nitrous oxide in his veins. The latter gives cars an instant boost, enabling them to rocket along suburban roads at 170mph.

Relative newcomer Michelle Rodriguez of "Girlfight" fame proves she can do more than box in the role of Toretto’s girlfriend. This girl can act and is a hot upcoming actress. Wearing grease-stained vests and other garage chic garb she would make any man wanna tune his motor!
This is not a movie that will change your life or cause any serious introspection. However, the driving stunts are very, very impressive. The two chase scenes framing the main body of the film are adrenaline-pumping! They need to be seen to be believed.
Go see it for the stunt driving and try to ignore that crime can pay, criminals get better medical treatment than they deserve and, at the end of the day, the producers are trying to make you care about the lives of a bunch of thieves.
See page 2 for what the American critics said about the film.
