The 2017 San Diego Comic-Con gleamed into the horizon over the weekend as film studios, television networks and other miscellaneous organisations showcased their upcoming content for avid pop-culture enthusiasts.
Many, including ourselves, yearned for the opportunity to attend – it did take place in the US after all. However; those who were fortunate enough heard our cries – and of course, the love was spread. Media outlets, to the best of their ability, reported the ins and outs of the convention; while film studios and TV networks were kind enough to share bits of content online.
Once again, it was a battle between DC and Marvel. The two giant comic book competitors duked it out; impressing cinephiles with their upcoming superhero film slate.
But the question on everybody's lips remain... who came out on top?
Here are the biggest highlights of this year's pop-culture convention...
Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg together on the big screen for the first time! Who wouldn't pay to see that? Warner Bros treated fans with an explosive four-minute clip that thankfully paints a superhero ensemble trying its utmost to avoid emulating Marvel – and it looks positively excellent! Go forth DC; bring us the superhero team-up film we've all been dying to see!
Speaking of Marvel; the second Thor flick was an absolute letdown – considering the excellent precedent director Kenneth Branagh set-up in the original. The third chapter takes the God of Thunder to the farther reaches of the universe – something chapter two failed to achieve. And if the latest trailer is any indication, the stakes appear to be higher this time round. A publication by the name of SlashFilm (who attended the event) reported that attendees were treated to an exclusive clip; while details involving Loki and the Hulk's roles in the film were teased. (Head over there for the full details). Plus, Cate Blanchett's fiendish Hela looks like the Marvel villainess fans have eagerly been awaiting!
Avengers 3: Infinity War
We've all been introduced to Thanos – the Marvel Cinematic Universe's big bad. We met his acquaintance during the end credits of the first Avengers, and got a closer view during Guardians of the Galaxy. Attendees were lucky enough to see The Mad Titan battle the superhero team in their upcoming third outing – and things aren't looking so good for Earth's Mightiest Heroes according to SlashFilm.
Steven Spielberg's innovative virtual reality flick
Steven Spielberg has a futuristic film about virtual reality called Ready Player One coming; and it looks positively glorious if the debut trailer is anything to go by. In this case, let the trailer speak for itself…
Multiple media outlets reported that a Doctor Doom movie is on the way. Yes, the Fantastic Four's arch-nemesis is getting his very own spinoff film – an unexpected bombshell that almost certainly shook Comic-Con to the core. Noah Hawley – the man behind the critically acclaimed X-Men TV show, Legion – is working on the film, so this should be interesting. Will it shepherd the struggling Fantastic Four franchise in the right direction? Guess we'll have to take the 'wait and see' approach.

Aquaman – DC's underwater superhero – swims into theatres in December 2018. Despite the one-and-a-half-year gap, Warner Bros were kind enough to give eagerly awaiting attendees a taste of what's to come. According to Variety, attendees "were transported underwater" to bear witness the first batch of Aquaman footage. (Read all about it here)
Your favourite TV shows are back!
The first trailers for Stranger Things season 2, The Walking Dead season 8 and Westworld season 2 made their long-awaited debuts. And luckily, non-attendees are able to bask in their ambience as well.
