Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Fences sees global superstars Denzel Washington and Viola Davis in a film together for the first time.
Taking place in the 1950's, Fences follows Troy Maxson (Washington) – a stern African American garbage collector with traditional views.
Troy has a loving and devoted wife named Rose (Davis), along with their offspring son Cory (Jovan Adepo) – an aspiring football player who is being scouted to play in the National Football League (NFL).
Due to his "old school" way of thinking, Troy strongly objects to Cory's endeavours, believing that the colour of his [Cory] skin will prevent him from going far. Troy was a talented Baseball player in his youth who is convinced that race played a role in him being rejected for the league, despite people telling him otherwise. Troy also feels that Cory should take responsibility and find a real job.
Troy's fixed mindset and domineering personality soon put his marriage and his relationship with his son in jeopardy, as he fails to acknowledge the error of his ways.
Fences require viewers to keep their brains on high alert as its dialogue-heavy script is where the action lies.
The film relies on dialogue to tell its excellently crafted story – which is complex, powerful, compelling, thought-provoking and detailed.
The three-dimensional characters are the other factors that makes this film highly entertaining; as their complexities, enigmatic motivations and views will keep audiences mesmerised in a guessing game of what will happen next?
Washington, like his character, dominates the screen and delivers an excellent (and awards worthy) performance. Davis brings an emotional vulnerability to Rose with a powerful performance that will tug at audiences' heartstrings.
Washington – who also directs here – ensures a successful play to screen transition; and ultimately delivers a rich character-driven piece, a compelling story, along with powerful performances.
