A documentary about Winnie Madikizela-Mandela aims to show a different side to the struggle stalwart.
The film, titled Winnie, is playing at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.
Director Pascale Lamche has made documentaries about South Africa before and says she felt compelled to re-examine Madikizela-Mandela’s place in history.
“It’s a universal story but also about a major figure who has been phenomenal.”
The film features in-depth interviews with the struggle stalwart conducted over two years.
“She’s a controversial character and I wanted to get closer to her truth.”
Winnie is a French, Dutch and South African co-production.
