Freshlyground and ZA News have teamed up on the band's latest music video, entitled Chicken to Change.
The song, which calls on Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe to "become the hero he used to be" was directed by Theirry Cassuto – executive producer of satirical internet show ZA News.
The video features a latex figure of Mugabe promising to "be faithful and bear true allegiance to Zimbabwe and observe the laws of Zimbabwe", before he reappears in the back of a chauffeur-driven car reading "Bob's Times".
The band performs on a stage dressed in retro Zimbabwean fashion and performing a chicken dance. Lead singer Zolani Mahola sings in a shebeen for some of South Africa's most popular public figures. Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu are depicted playing dominoes, Jacob Zuma is spotted flirting with a table of women, Peter de Villiers is represented coaching foosball and Helen Zille makes an appearance jiving to the music while Zolani sings "I remember a time when you were noble, a conqueror, a supernova". She continues with "An iridescent example of honour for the coming generation/ You promised always to open the doors for us/ Indeed it is you and only you who sleeps with the key/ You are chicken to change!"
The band's spokesperson, Sarah Barnett, was quoted as saying that "The video is not an attack on Mugabe at all. It is a tongue-in-cheek challenge for him to reflect on things and become the hero he used to be, to consider his actions and surprise us. We are not afraid of his reaction. Why should we be in a democratic world?"
