Oh, you noticed?

Fortunately, networks do click on every now and then, and shows get cancelled ? although often too late.

Prison Break

'Prison Break' was a breath of fresh air when it first debuted. The show was cleverly written, and you absolutely had to tune in for every episode. Wentworth Miller made female viewers weak at the knees and there was enough action to keep the men coming back. The question throughout the whole first season was "What happens when they break out of prison?" Well, they go on the run. Then get thrown back into prison. And try to break out again. And I changed the channel. Mercifully, the show as canned after season four.

The X-Files

At its peak, nothing could touch The X-Files. Its combination of dark humour, insane sexual tension and the supernatural was the darling of the 1990s. And it was one of those shows that the network just couldn't let go. David Duchovny lost interest and left the show, and still the show limped on. Then Scully seemed ready to leave ? so they introduced another leading lady. Even after main plot features were resolved, the show continued. Through two movie spin-offs as well. Why oh why did it not die?

That 70s show

The show that was so kitsch it was actually hip. Set in the seventies, this coming-of-age comedy was a hit. The show that propelled Ashton Kutcher into superstardom had a young, pretty cast and some really clever writers. However, as the teens got older and the storylines got more tired, two of the show's biggest stars ? Topher Grace and Ashton Kutcher ? left to pursue their movie careers. Then Jackie hooked up with Fez and the crew realised they'd gone too far and called it quits after season eight.

Shows that should never have been cancelled

Dead Like Me. A very cool, very funny and very weird show about an 18-year-old girl who dies and becomes a reaper. Apparently the network didn't agree, because it was pulled after two seasons.

Pushing Daisies. Nobody can figure this one out. At all. A great idea, a great storyline and above all really great actors.

Firefly. This was criminal. 'Buffy' creator Joss Whedon's "space western" got pulled off the air before it even finished its first season. It has now become a cult classic, and FOX must be kicking themselves in the head. Repeatedly.
