We dig up some of iafrica.com readers' favourite features from 2009!

They say that you can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family. These celebs must wish they could swap their parents for a new BFF.

Jennifer Aniston
Jennifer Aniston has had a rocky relationship with her photographer mother Nancy since childhood. Nancy would apparently make Jen feel 'unbeautiful', criticising her facial features. When Jennifer landed the role in 'Friends' that would make her famous, her mother started hanging around the set of 'Friends', passing herself off as an actress.

Their already-strained relationship crumbled after the pair had a massive falling out in 1996. Nancy, already famed for trying to ride on her daughter's coat-tails, revealed a little too much about her daughter's weight struggles in a television interview. Jennifer phoned Nancy after the show and yelled "I will never forgive you", before slamming down the receiver.

And instead of trying to patch things up with her daughter in private, Nancy instead published a "self-help" book about dealing with an estranged adult child, entitled 'From Mother and Daughter to Friends'. Needless to say, this appeared to hammer the final nail into the coffin of their relationship.

However, after Jen's 2004 divorce from Brad Pitt, the two began what will probably be a very, very lengthy process of reconciliation.

Drew Barrymore
The cherub-like Drew Barrymore shot to super-stardom in the Steven Spielberg classic 'E.T', but as quickly as she rose to fame, it seemed she was destined for the scrap heap. This was due, in part, to her mother's bad influence on her, and her divorced father's absence.

After Drew landed the role in 'E.T', Jaid Barrymore started carting her daughter to various inappropriate places, from Hollywood parties to sleazy night clubs. It's no wonder that Drew started drinking heavily at age 9, and started doing cocaine at 13.

This wonder-parenting also saw Drew spend not one, but two stints in rehab before she even turned sixteen. At age 15, Drew emancipated herself from her parents.

Not content to just be a terrible influence, she also posed for Playboy eight months after her daughter's pictorial appeared in the racy magazine, and tried to auction off some of Drew's belongings on an Internet site.

In 2000, Drew tried to patch things up with Nancy, but in a recent interview with InStyle she revealed that she still had some things to work out with her mother.

Amy Winehouse
Amy Winehouse is pretty much the poster child for troubled. Not only has she fought a lengthy and public battle with addictions to drugs and alcohol, but she leapt into a bizarre marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil. Amy has also been accused of assault, she has been bust for drug possession and she reportedly has a new-found obsession with plastic surgery. Whew.

It comes as no surprise that her parents are slightly crazy.

Amy's father, former taxi driver Mitch Winehouse, is quoted in tabloid interviews nearly every single day. He seems determined to keep Amy's name in the paper — for whatever reason — and by default, his own name as well.

Instead of playing the role of supportive father, or even taking his issues home to deal with, he has found a pedestal in the tabloid press and seems content to harp on about everything from Amy's sex life to her new breasts. Not something I would have wanted my father to talk about to me, let alone the press. Just saying.

On page two: It couldn't get any worse, right? Wrong.
