Would somebody please tell me what the hell is going on in Joost van der Westhuizen's brain?

It appears the rugby idol took too many knocks to the head during his days in a Springbok jersey, because his handling of the whole situation was not only bizarre, but just plain ludicrous too.

When the Joostgate scandal exploded in February, it dominated headlines for weeks. And Joost's defence was the defence made famous in a really crappy Shaggy song.

"But we caught you in your undies" (It wasn't me)
"Saw you snortin' some dodgy stuff" (It wasn't me)
"You even had your socks on" (It wasn't me)
"She even caught you on camera" (It wasn't me)

Even to his wife, every day until August: "It wasn't me". Amor revealed in an interview with Jacaranda FM that she was cooking when Joost confessed. I can only imagine how that one went. And what was Joost thinking? Coming clean in the kitchen? With all those knives? And frying pans? Come now, Joost. Not intelligent.

The whole thing has been a public relations nightmare for the rugby hero, although the media are lapping it up. Surely he should have owned up to it all in the first place? In February, already?

"Oh yes, that was me in the video. Should've taken off my socks though, that would have made it better." No, instead he insisted he had been framed. Blackmailed. An outrage, really. He hired a fancy private investigator and vowed to take action against the people who released the video… which he never did.

Now, he is not only a cheating husband, but a liar too. And that is much more difficult to bounce back from. The public's trust in the Joost and Amor fairytale has been shattered, with Joost cast as the slimy hubby, slithering around behind Amor's back. And to be honest, I think he deserves all the criticism he's getting.

I know that it's easy to stand on my pedestal and criticise Joost's decision to keep mum at first. In fact, I can go just as easily go back further and criticise his decision to snuffle around for scraps away from home. But, yes, spouses do cheat on each other, and most of the time they're lucky enough not to have their dalliances sold to the tabloids for a quick buck.

But Joost should have manned up, taken the heat. And even if he didn't own up in public (was there ever any reason to?) he could have, at least, come clean to his wife. Immediately. Not six months down the line after she's been forced to field questions about your infidelity. And Amor, to her credit, stood by Joost. But I guess she's feeling twice as hurt now as she did then. I know I would. In fact, I would have chucked his ass out on the street by now.

On page two: The hits just keep on coming, but at least the book is doing well...
