It's Halloween, and what better way to get into the spirit of things than with a horror movie fest?

For the record, I am a complete wuss when it comes to scary movies, and my list of the scariest movies I've ever seen would a) be quite long and b) would include 'The Sixth Sense', which people tend to snigger at. So in order to provide iafrica.com readers with a list of the best of the horror movie genre, I rounded up the rest of the iafrica.com gang and posed one simple question — Which horror movies scared you the most?

Here are our top eight…

8. Nosferatu (1922)
Long before the pretty, sparkly vampires of 'Twilight', there was 'Nosferatu'. This silent classic sees Max Schreck in the iconic role of Count Orlok in what was essentially an unauthorised adaptation of the Bram Stoker novel 'Dracula'. The film reached iconic status with horror fans, and is regarded as one of the best horrors of all time. Orlok's appearance alone — rat-like in appearance — is enough to send shivers up any spine, and spark speculation that Schreck himself was actually a vampire...

7. Halloween (1978)
This movie has been widely parodied and adapted for other films, but it remains a cult classic in the slasher genre. After murdering his older sister on Halloween night at the age of six, Michael Myers is institutionalised. His psychiatrist describes him as 'pure evil' and wants him to remain locked up. However, he escapes from custody and goes after young Laurie Strode — played by Jamie Lee Curtis. The villain who just won't die is terrifying in the original, less so in the countless sequels.

6. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Arguably the best zombie movie made. Following an ever-growing epidemic of zombies that have risen from the dead, a group of people seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall. George A. Romero's classic film was remade in 2004 — and will probably be easier to get hold of at your local movie rental store. While the new version is slightly different in plot, the two remain as beacons in the zombie movie genre, and contribute to my sheer terror of the undead. Well, that and 'Resident Evil'.

5. It (1990)
The story that ensure a whole generation of moviegoers remain terrified of clowns. The first of two adaptations of Stephen King novels on our list, 'It' starred Tim Curry as the murderous clown Pennywise. While not strictly a movie (it is in fact a two-part, made for television miniseries), many people nominated this as the movie that scared them the most. Warner Brothers have announced a 2011 feature film adaptation of 'It' — so look forward to the clown surfacing again.
