We dig up some of iafrica.com readers' favourite features from 2009!

Celebrities try to outdo each other in a whole range of ways.

They compete for the best roles, the most talented designers, the most photographs on the red carpet… and the most unique baby names.

Obviously they seem to think that, although their child is the offspring of someone famous, they need that little "extra" to stand out at school. And so they bestow upon their children the most outrageous names they can think of… just to make sure junior has to go to school with pepper spray and a steel lunch box.

But these kids will probably need a personal bodyguard too…

Sparrow James Midnight

A very new entry to the weird baby name list. Born on 9 September 2009 to parents Nicole Richie and Joel Madden, baby boy Sparrow has an older sister with the relatively pretty name Harlow Winter. I can go with 'James Midnight' and I can even deal with 'Sparrow James'. But all three at once? I hope at least the boy will be grateful that his parents didn't name him 'Midnight Sparrow James' instead...

Kyd Miller

I would have loved to have been in the room when they came up with that one. Not the most original name ever, but I guess at least it sounds normal. David Duchovny and Tea Leoni must have been concerned that they would forget their son's name. Now they can just yell out: "Hey, kid!" and spare all those awkward moments.

Sage Moonblood

We know that Sylvester Stallone went a little bushwacked during his Rambo days, but 'Moonblood' is pushing it. Thankfully for Stallone's son, Moonblood is his middle name and the director goes by 'Sage Stallone', which sounds a lot more respectable. I do like the tribal sound of it, although I always picture somebody dressed up as a Native American dancing around with a spear.

Fifi Trixibelle

Bob Geldof and Paula Yates obviously tried to squeeze in as many dog names into their daughter's moniker as possible. If somebody yells out Fifi's full name in the road, at least three perfectly manicured poodles come charging out of the distance. Apparently Fifi gets her first name from Geldof's aunt. Fifi also has a sister Peaches Honeyblossom, and half-sister Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily.

Moon Unit

Frank Zappa was famous for his eclectic and experimental take on music… and he reflected his enthusiasm for the different through the naming of his children. Obviously used to pushing the bar in the studio, Zappa pulled names like Moon Unit, Diva Muffin and Dweezil out the bag for his kids.

Zuma Nesta Rock

Nope, not named after South Africa's current president, but actually after his parents' favourite beach. While critics have applauded Gwen Stefani and her rocker husband for bestowing such a personal and heartfelt name on their son, it still stands out as one of the most unusual names in Tinseltown.

Maddox, Pax, Knox

Calling the children must be great fun in the Brangelina household. When you want all three, you can just yell out 'Ksss' and all three should come running. With names like Shiloh and Zahara, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's girls didn't miss out on the fun either. It's only their third daughter — Vivienne, named after Angelina's mother — who gets away unscathed.

Blue Angel

If you're The Edge and part of one of the most enormous bands on the planet, then by default you have to do something outrageous on a regular basis. So instead of the U2 guitarist just calling his daughter Angel, he and his wife decided to attach a colour to her, possibly to avoid confusion. Or something.

Kal-El

Nicolas Cage is famed for his love of comic books. In fact, he switched his surname 'Coppola' for his on-screen surname Cage in honour of the Marvel comic book character Luke Cage. He named his son Kal-El, which is Superman's name on his home planet of Krypton. He couldn't have just called his child Clark. Or Kent.

Pilot Inspektor

What else would you expect from Jason Lee of 'My Name is Earl' fame? Not only did he choose the first name of Pilot for his poor son, but he then decided it was a great idea to spell his second name incorrectly. Sheesh. I have no words.

Audio Science

My personal favourite — and the one I pick when I want an example of crazy celebrity baby names. Shannyn Sossamon of 'A Knight's Tale' fame had to have wanted something that would ensure her name was in the papers at regular intervals. And what better way to do so than pick a baby name that sounds like a course offered at your local technical college? The reason? "We wanted a word, not a name, so my boyfriend read through the dictionary three or four times. We were going to call him Science, but thought it might get shortened to Sci, as in 'Simon'." Yup, because that would have been the worst thing in the world.
