No, they aren't a Russian metal band. But that's what I thought when I heard the name. Voicst. Sounds mean. Like you should wear black clothes and heavy, hard, buckled boots when listening to this.
How wrong I was.
Maybe I should remind myself about the judging a book by its cover adage. Voicst are a pop rock trio who hail from the Netherlands, and write catchy pop-laden hooks bound to get your foot a tapping.
They're about to do a mini-tour of South Africa and play the infamous Oppikoppi festival so I asked drummer, Joppe Molenaar a couple of questions.
Painter Jane: Are you guys excited to be coming to SA? Have you been here before, and if not, what are you expecting? We have never been to SA before and we are very excited. We look forward to the festivals and to meet lots of new people.
Painter Jane: Why the decision to come to SA? Do you guys have a big fanbase from here?
Bands we know from Holland who have played there told us great things about Oppikoppi and traveling in SA. So when the opportunity came we couldn't resist going. We don't have a fanbase in SA. We never released anything here. We hope to change that this August.
Painter Jane: Describe Voicst to someone who has never heard your music before:
Energetic, positive. It's pop with a twist.
Painter Jane: What can we expect from the shows?
We try to make an energetic, musical and entertaining show. Voicst comes on stage with three extra musicians - all 6 of us bring our own different energies on stage.
Painter Jane: Are you playing with any SA bands? Do you know anything about our scene?
In Holland we don't see a lot from the SA scene. Actually I don't think we hear anything at all from them. I listened to a couple of bands we are gonna meet at the festivals. I'm curious to see them live.
Painter Jane: Oppikoppi is a mad festival. Are you guys party animals or do you keep it tidy?
We have some party animals in the band, mostly during the live show. Off stage we like to party but no-one has ever called the cops on us (although there has been an occasional ambulance).
Painter Jane: I see you toured with Tenacious D. That must've been fun.
They came to Holland and they wanted a local support. We were happy they chose us. Their show is very funny and off stage they attract a lot of fans backstage.
Got something to say?
