Classical ballet returns to Pretoria in style when Mzansi Productions and the South African Ballet Theatre (SABT) bring The Ballet Gala to the Brooklyn Theatre for three performances on 1, 3 and 6 June.
The two companies, merging into a new ballet and dance company later this year and who recently joined forces for Giselle and Celebration 3 in Johannesburg, showcase some of SA’s leading ballet stars in the Ballet Gala at the Brooklyn Theatre as well as dancers from other countries, including six impressive Cubans.
The handsome Brooklyn Theatre is the setting for a gala that includes classical ballet highlights such as the Don Quixote Pas de Deux, the Diana and Actaeon Pas de Deux and The Dying Swan and also showcases classical ballet rarities not seen in SA before.
SA ballerina Kitty Phetla, back from a tour of Russia, dances her acclaimed portrayal of the legendary Dying Swan, while SA ballet star Burnise Silvius lights up the stage with her dazzling Don Quixote Pas de Deux, partnered by Cuban virtuoso, Ramiro Samón.
The Ballet Gala at the Brooklyn Theatre also offers a cascade of award winning classical and contemporary solos from the recent Cape Town International Ballet Competition (CTIBC).
Mzansi Productions and SABT receive funding from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.
