Hey hey hey, it's the weekend! And that means lazing around at home, maybe getting a braai going, watching the rugby and chilling in front of the TV. What, not in the mood for that? Well, never fear — we've compiled a handy guide for all this weekend's hottest events in Jo'burg and the Mother City.
CAPE TOWN
Music
Isochronous are embarking on a nationwide tour. With all new songs, new stage design and new merchandise the band promises a 'belter' of a tour. Catch them at Mercury on Friday night from 8pm. On stage are also The Sleepers and 3rd World Spectator. Cover charge R30.
For those of you who don't fancy the rock scene, there's Robbie Wessels. Yes, he of the 'Leeuloop' fame will be performing at Presley's in Brackenfell on Friday. Tickets are only R60 and doors open at 7pm. Show starts at 9pm, but get there early to avoid disappointment.
A guitar, a glass of red wine, a few love-songs and a good measure of wit and scalding sattire. It must be Koos Kombuis ! Live at the Cape Diamond Hotel, come prepared for some old favourites - and make some new ones too! Tickets are R85 and the show starts at 8.30pm on Friday. Call 021 461 2519 to book.
The Cape Rocks. And at The Assembly this Saturday, some of South Africa's brightest rock bands will show you just how much. You can catch aKINGand Tiger Strike — among others — from 9pm at Harrington Street. The damage to your pocket — a mere R30.
Catch the acclaimed Taxi Violence at the Silvertree Restaurant at Kirstenbosch this Sunday. The show starts at 6.30pm and tickets are R100. You will receive a free drink and starter on entrance.
Gary Thomas, Andy Lund and Julia Jakobsen will all be doing their thing as part of the Levi's Vintage Sundays at the Jade Lounge in Greenpoint. Show starts at 7.30pm, and tickets are free so head in early to avoid the rush!
Stage and Comedy
That's Life! is Alvon Collison's new show. Like Barbara Streisand, Alvon is heading into a staggering 46 years in showbiz - and he and his cast will be paying tribute to the legend in their show. Expect Alvon's own special brand of humour in this musical revue. Friday is the show's last day so book for 2.15pm or 8.15. Tickets are R55 at the Baxter.
Catch the award-winning musical The Blues Brothers starring Johan Baird and Alwyn Kotze, who are joined by three Bluettes - Cape Town's Mono Dullisear, Lyndle Kearns and Crushanda Forbes. Musical numbers featured in this production include songs made famous by James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles. The show runs until August 1st with shows at 8pm on Mondays to Fridays, and at 5pm and 8pm on Saturdays. Tickets are R85 – R135 - call 074 134 6636.
