American rapper 50 Cent together with his G-Unit crew hit South Africa in the first week of May, playing at the Coca Cola Dome in Johannesburg on 1 May and at the Belville Velodrome in Cape Town on 3 May.
The G-Unit crew, which consists of 50 Cent, Young Buck, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo, will perform a combination of their hits as well as tracks from the superstar rapper's latest album, 'Curtis'. These will include chart toppers like '21 Questions', 'Out of Control' and the latest Timbaland collaboration, 'Ayo Technology'. In the USA, 'Curtis' sold 691 000 copies in its first week of release and features guest appearances by Justin Timberlake and Akon amongst others.
Born Curtis James Jackson III in 1976 in Queens, 50 Cent has lived in New York City all his life. Enduring substantial obstacles — including being shot nine times, and surviving — he has gone on to become one rap's most controversial names.
After releasing his album 'Guess Who's Back?' in 2002, he was discovered by rapper Eminem who, with Dr. Dre, produced his first major commercial successes.
In 2003, he founded the record label G-Unit Records, which signed other rappers, including Young Buck, Lloyd Banks, and Tony Yayo. His debut album 'Get Rich or Die Tryin'' (2003) and its follow-up 'The Massacre' (2005) both achieved multi-platinum success, selling over 15 million records worldwide.
50 Cent has also pursued an acting career, appearing in the semi-autobiographical film 'Get Rich or Die Tryin'' in 2005 and the Iraq War film 'Home of the Brave' in 2006. When 50 Cent joined Eminem on his third Anger Management Tour in 2005, the tour was touted as the most successful of its kind in rap history.
